Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland is generally classified as a post-conflict environment. The Troubles lasted for over three decades and culminated in the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. However, ongoing tension, marginalization and occasional violence continue to be obstacles to lasting peace and stability. As such, Northern Ireland offers vast insights into the realm of ethnonational conflict as well as that of peacebuilding and post-conflict reconciliation.

During our travel we examine the critical role of diaspora relations, economical development, the role women played in the peace processes as well as the impact of civil society and the arts. Looking at post-conflict efforts, Northern Ireland is a unique case study for post-conflict justice as it relates to issues of marginalization, segregation and policing reform. We explore the impact of ongoing segregation as well as some of the socio psychological barriers to genuine reconciliation; the creation of an open discourse between communities, establishment of a shared national narrative, development of mechanisms to effectively address transgenerational trauma, communal mistrust and reintegration of ex-combatants. Finally, in light of the Brexit referendum, we also explore regional factors and direct implications for Northern Ireland’s position within the E.U. and its future relations with the United Kingdom.
